Welcome to McBryde Publishing.
We are a writers cooperative that publishes our authors’ works. I want to supplement here the information we have on our About Us page.
Here’s the deal. We are a writers co-op, which is different from the other types of publishing companies for which you may be aware. Traditional usually publishes authors that already have a following (and, therefore, is not edited closely). They also buy the rights books represented by agents. A simple search shows many traditional companies are not requesting for submissions, for they only accept ones from agents. Lame, right?
Vanity presses simply charge to publish your book. Some may offer cover design and some edits. We may seem like a vanity, but that is only on the surface.
We are a cooperative. Different co-ops operate in different ways. Unlike vanities, we do NOT publish anybody willing to pay us. You must first be a member of the co-op. This is not like a gym; you do not get membership simply by paying a monthly fee. You get membership by having a manuscript we have accepted to publish and proving yourself to be a writer who’s willing to work with us in perfecting your story.
Here’s the process to being a member with McBryde.
11. Submit your work to us
2. We either accept it or reject it
3. What we do:
· Edit (substantive and line)
· Supply an ISBN
· Create a cover (with your input)
· Format text
· Organize printing
· Distribute hardcopies and eBook copies
· Market through social media
4. What you do (after finalizing your draft)
· Sign contract
· Pay for the number of copies you want printed
· Control how you want to market your book
· Help other authors in the co-op with anything of which you are capable. This can be in marketing, cover design, editing, etc.
To get off subject, I feel I should introduce you to the people in charge of McBryde Publishing. I mean, why should you trust us if you don’t know anything about us?
I’ll start with the guys who founded McBryde. Skip Crayton was looking for a way to publish a collection of articles he had written for the local paper. His late wife suggested creating his own publishing company (fun fact: “McBryde” was her maiden name). So, he did with the help of his friend, Bill Benners.*
Bill is the creative genius in our group. Aside from writing a successful novel, he creates gorgeous posters, films, book covers, and web sites. Our website, in fact, is a Benners work. Our members work with Bill to create their book covers.*
Then there’s me, Eryn Kawecki. I graduated in 2009 from Christopher Newport University with a BA in English and later supplemented that education with a certificate of completion in editing from UC Berkeley. I started as an intern in 2011 and worked my way up to being the managing editor. More likely than not, I will be the first McBryde person with whom you will be in contact. Aside from blogging, editing, and keeping current on emails, I also Twitter and Facebook (remember to like us on FB and follow us on Twitter!).
That’s us in a big nutshell. Any questions? Ask us in the comments.
*As stated, Skip and Bill are authors. I wouldn’t be doing my duty if I didn’t tell you the titles. Skip’s books are Remember When, Life After Death, and The Letter Sweater. Bill’s is My Sister’s Keeper. I have no immediate plans for writing a book.
